Introduction to Rug Sizing and Its Impact on Home Design
Most rug sizing mistakes happen because people guess.
A rug that is too small makes the whole room feel disconnected, no matter how beautiful the furniture is.
The simple principle: Your furniture should sit on the rug, not around it.
Lounge: “front legs on” – Your sofa and chairs should have their front legs on the rug. Your coffee table should sit fully on the rug with 40–60 cm of rug visible around it.
Dining: “chairs stay on” – Choose a rug big enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Add 80–100 cm on each side of the table.
Bedroom: “two-thirds under the bed” – Position the rug so about two-thirds sits under the bed, with a generous border showing at the sides and foot. If you are unsure, go slightly bigger. A larger rug looks grounded. A small rug always looks accidental.
